Christian Chibuike Oluoma

Being a first-generation scholar and a firstborn child responsible for two other siblings, I have cultivated the act of leadership and have always embraced every opportunity to lead and guide others. As an undergraduate, I have developed sound leadership skills, as demonstrated in the impact I made towards the improvement of the student body. I served as a one-time speaker and clerk of the Nigerian Institution of Surveying Student House of Assembly (NISSHA), where I oversaw the approval of bills and budgets while making critical decisions to improve the welfare of the students. Having passed through the rigorous training of the Harvard Aspire Leaders program, my leadership skills developed exponentially, making me fit to make independent decisions and coordinate activities in a team. This was evidenced as I led a research team of young Africans from Tanzania, Ghana, and Kenya in a research project to investigate the pattern of heat risk in Kinshasa, DRC. I had to schedule meetings with the consideration of different time zones and religious activities in mind. We ended the program as the best research team. As the assistant team lead of the Lion Mappers Team, I led my team of volunteer mappers in securing the mapping metrics award given by Youthmappers to high-performing chapters with high contributions of quality edits in OpenStreetMap in 2022. I have also served as the director of media at the University of Nigeria Scholar Accelerator (UNSA), where I revolutionized the media department. I harnessed social media to increase the community’s visibility, and I also developed a standard template for making highlights of posts made on our media pages. This template is being used by my successor and has been of great significance to the community in general.
