Daniel Chukwuemeka Ottah

Currently, I am the Founder and President of climXus (Climate & Us), one of the fast growing climate action community in African with over 130 members dedicated to creating awareness, and sustainable initiatives/projects aimed to combat the global issue of climate change (https://climxus.org.ng/). Through leadership, team work and collaborative spirit, climXus partnered with Plogging Nigeria to carry out clean up exercise of plastic wastes from the Marina Resorts beach Calabar, Cross-river state Nigeria. I am a great advocate on climate change and I volunteered in the recent UNICEF sponsored project on planting of 3000 mangroves trees for CO2 sequestration at the Mangrove Restoration & Research Park, Calabar South Cross-river state, Nigeria. In scientific contribution, I am an early career researcher in the area of environmental sciences and Drug Discovery with 3 published research articles (2 conference paper & 1 research article), 4 research article under-review in high impact journal. Also, I made a poster presentation during the 5th Common Wealth Chemistry Conference organized by the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK. In one of the research collaboration with cancer researchers, I developed a machine learning model for predicting skin cancer (skin melanoma) using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). This machine learning model can be integrated into the skin cancer detection system. I work as teaching assistant in the department of Chemistry, University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria and also a research assistant at the Computational and Bio-simulation research laboratory. Through an effort to raise more African scientists I founded TECHEM-360 Artificial Intelligence Research Group, where I have mentored over 20 students on research paper writing, and developing of machine learning model for solving scientific problem in Africa and Globally. In community development services, I am the Secretary General of Drug Free and Quality Control Community Development Service, In partnership with the National Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency we have carried over 15 drug-free sensitization programs at different institutions in Calabar, Cross-river state, Nigeria including 13 Brigade Army Barracks, Markets, Secondary Schools, primary schools and communities enlightening the community members on the dangers of Drug abuse and this have increase the awareness of the dangers of drug abuse by 33% in Calabar. In conclusion, I love seeking out for mentorship opportunities like this one as to become a top leader in Africa and to mentor others as well.
